Sinharaja Rainforest

Sinharaja is Sri Lanka’s most important lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its rich biodiversity and high endemism. It is a haven for birdwatchers, home to over 20 endemic bird species including the Serendib Scops Owl and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. The forest also shelters rare amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals, making it a vital conservation area.

Kithulgala

Kitulgala is a lush rainforest zone nestled along the Kelani River, offering excellent birding opportunities in a wet zone environment. It is one of the best places to spot endemic species such as the Sri Lanka Orange-billed Babbler and Green-billed Coucal. In addition to birds, its forests and riverbanks support a variety of butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles.

Horton Plains NP

Located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Horton Plains is a montane cloud forest and grassland ecosystem. It is the prime location to observe highland endemics such as the Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush and Sri Lanka Bush Warbler. The park is also home to sambar deer, leopards, and unique flora adapted to the cool, misty climate.

Wilpattu NP

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park, known for its dense forest cover and natural lakes, or “villus.” It offers excellent chances to spot leopards, sloth bears, and a variety of birdlife including eagles, storks, and junglefowl. Its quiet, less-crowded environment makes for a more intimate wildlife viewing experience.

Yala NP

Yala is Sri Lanka’s most popular national park, famed for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. It also supports a wide range of other species, from elephants and crocodiles to over 200 bird species including the Black-necked Stork and Painted Stork. The park's diverse habitats—coastal lagoons, scrublands, and forests—make it a wildlife hotspot.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya, while famous for its ancient rock fortress, is also rich in birdlife due to its surrounding dry-zone forests and wetlands. Species such as the Indian Pitta, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, and various raptors can be spotted in the area. The site's mix of cultural history and natural habitat makes it a unique birding destination.

Mannar

Mannar, located in the arid north-west of Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s most unique ecological hotspots. Its mix of coastal ecosystems, scrub forests, and wetlands creates habitats that support an exceptional range of wildlife—from jackals and fishing cats to sea turtles and dugongs. Each year, Mannar becomes a key stop on the Central Asian Flyway, attracting thousands of Greater Flamingos, sandpipers, plovers, terns, and godwits to its mudflats and saltpans—making it one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable birding hotspots.
